OneBusAway is an open source platform for real time transit information for Puget Sound, Rogue Valley, San Diego or Tampa Bay. Created by developers and researchers at the University of Washington, a massive amount of information made it challenging for users to interact with on-time information.
The goal of this project was to re-organize the information for daily commuters to access their frequent rides easily by providing clearer information architecture and visual design.
Existing Information Architecture
Current information architecture has four main pillars: Map, Recent, Bookmarks, and Info. The map is most frequently used but real-time bus arrival information require two clicks to reveal. Info page has too many hidden features and information.
Revised Information Architecture
The new information architecture simplified the steps to make the map part as a hero. Planning trip function was added to show recommended routes and modes of transportation. Planning function could also add bookmarks for people who use the same route repetitively.
